Therefore, it is very important to treat the organic matter in wastewater before discharging them into the environment.

BOD (Biochemical oxygen demand) is the amount of oxygen required for microorganisms to oxidize biodegradable organic substances under aerobic conditions.
BOD is a parameter that represents the level of organic matter in water. If the BOD value is high, it means that the water source is seriously contaminated with organic matter and vice versa. Therefore, determining the BOD index in wastewater is extremely necessary. If this index exceeds the set standard threshold, appropriate handling measures should be taken.
What methods are there to treat BOD in wastewater?
The organic substances present in the wastewater are treated through many different stages but mainly by biological methods in the second stage of treatment. First, when entering the wastewater treatment system, about 30% of BOD will be treated at the preliminary treatment stage by constructions such as trash racks, grease separation tanks, and preliminary settling tanks.

If BOD in wastewater is not treated, how will it affect the system?
If the BOD content in wastewater is not treated but discharged into the environment, they will take oxygen to decompose. So the oxygen in the water will be reduced. The higher the BOD concentration of wastewater, the lower the amount of oxygen in the water. Without BOD treatment, organisms in the water will die from a lack of oxygen. At the same time, wastewater will have an unpleasant odor due to the anaerobic decomposition of BOD.
