Currently, environmental protection, especially water resource protection, is a matter of global concern. However, water sources are increasingly seriously polluted. One of the main causes of water pollution is organic matter present in the water. Therefore, it is very important to treat the organic matter in wastewater before discharging them into the environment.

Let’s learn about BOD – measurement of organic matter pollution

BOD (Biochemical oxygen demand) is the amount of oxygen required for microorganisms to oxidize biodegradable organic substances under aerobic conditions.

BOD is a parameter that represents the level of organic matter in water. If the BOD value is high, it means that the water source is seriously contaminated with organic matter and vice versa. Therefore, determining the BOD index in wastewater is extremely necessary. If this index exceeds the set standard threshold, appropriate handling measures should be taken.

What methods are there to treat BOD in wastewater?

The organic substances present in the wastewater are treated through many different stages but mainly by biological methods in the second stage of treatment. First, when entering the wastewater treatment system, about 30% of BOD will be treated at the preliminary treatment stage by constructions such as trash racks, grease separation tanks, and preliminary settling tanks.

After preliminary treatment, wastewater containing organic solids is transferred and treated as secondary by biological methods such as aerobic, anaerobic, anaerobic processes, or a combination of these processes together to achieve the best processing efficiency.

BOD treatment by the biological method is based on the principle of using microorganisms to treat organic substances in the water to form products that are not harmful to the environment. Organic matter is considered as food for the growth and development of microorganisms. Microorganisms digest organic matter to form biomass, CO2, and water.

Depending on the microorganism, it can be treated by aerobic, anaerobic, and anaerobic methods. Sometimes it is possible to combine methods together for the best efficiency.

Treatment of BOD in wastewater by aerobic biological method

This method uses aerobic microorganisms, in which oxygen is involved, to decompose biodegradable organic substances

Aerobic BOD removal can occur under natural or artificial conditions. But in man-made constructions, optimal conditions are created for the process. So the process efficiency and speed are much higher than the natural process.

Treatment of BOD in wastewater by anoxic biological method

Anoxic biological method is a method that uses microorganisms to process nitrogen under anoxic conditions to form new biomass and N2.

This method needs to be combined with aerobic or anaerobic methods to achieve high treatment efficiency.

Treatment of BOD in wastewater by anaerobic biological method

Anaerobic biological method is a method that uses anaerobic microorganisms to treat pollutants in the absence of oxygen.

The anaerobic treatment process is divided into four stages: hydrolysis of polymers, fermentation of amino acids and sugars (Acidification), anaerobic digestion (acetification), and formation of methane gas (Methanation)

What kind of factory wastewater is BOD present in?

Wastewaters containing biodegradable organic matter will have a high BOD. Wastewaters such as domestic wastewater, textile wastewater, etc. will have high BOD concentrations.

If BOD in wastewater is not treated, how will it affect the system?

If the BOD content in wastewater is not treated but discharged into the environment, they will take oxygen to decompose. So the oxygen in the water will be reduced. The higher the BOD concentration of wastewater, the lower the amount of oxygen in the water. Without BOD treatment, organisms in the water will die from a lack of oxygen. At the same time, wastewater will have an unpleasant odor due to the anaerobic decomposition of BOD.
