What is a boiler?

Boilers are the source of heat supply for technological equipment through the heat conducting medium high pressure steam.

Boilers can be heated from many different sources.

Currently, people use three main types of fuel for furnaces: wood, coal or FO oil.

Characteristics of wood-burning boiler exhaust smoke

  • The exhaust gas flow from the chimney has a temperature of about 120-150o C depending on the furnace structure. The composition of exhaust smoke includes firewood combustion products, mainly CO2, CO, N2 gases, along with a few substances in the firewood that do not When completely burned, residual oxygen and ash fly away with the air flow.
  • When burning wood, the composition of substances in the exhaust gas changes depending on the type of wood. However, the amount of emissions produced is relatively stable. To calculate, we can use the value VT20 = 4.23 m3/kg. This means that when burning 1 kg of firewood, 4.23 m3 of exhaust gas will be produced at a temperature of 200o
  • .

  • The ash dust in the boiler exhaust gas is part of the unburnt substances and unburnt impurities in the firewood. The amount of these impurities usually accounts for 1% of dry firewood weight. Dust in wood-burning boiler exhaust has concentrations ranging from 200-500 mg/m3 .

Characteristics of coal-fired boiler exhaust smoke

  • Coal-fired boiler exhaust gases mainly carry smoke, ash, CO2, CO, SO2, SO3 and NOx is created by components  in coal combining with oxygen during the burning process. The sulfur content in coal is ≅ 0.5%, so the exhaust gas has SO2 with a concentration of about 1,333 mg/m3. The amount of emissions depends on each type of coal, with Quang Ninh Anthracite coal, the amount of emissions when burning 1 kg of coal is V020 ≈ 7.5 m3/kg.

Characteristics of exhaust smoke from F.O oil-fired boiler

  • In the exhaust gas of F.O oil-fired boilers, people often see the following substances: CO2, CO, SO2, SO3  and water vapor, in addition there is a small amount of ash and very small ash particles mixed with unburnt oil that exist in the form of an aerosol that we often call soot.

Pollution load of F.O oil:

  • Emissions: The amount of boiler emissions when burning F.O oil changes little. The air demand needed to burn 1 kg of F.O oil is V020 = 10.6 m3/kg.
  • The amount of boiler exhaust gas produced when burning 1 kg of F.O oil is: Vc20 ≈ 11.5 m3/kg ≈ 13.8 kg of exhaust gas/1kg of oil.

Explanation of boiler exhaust gas treatment technology

The boiler exhaust gas stream containing dust will be collected into the treatment system.

Here the gas and dust flow is sent through the cooling tower before entering the cyclon.

Then it is inserted into cyclon in the tangential direction.

Under the effect of the centrifugal fan, large dust particles collide with the device body.

Dust particles lose inertia fall to the bottom of the cyclone and are periodically collected outside.

After the gas stream is clean of dust, it will continue to process SO2 thanks to the absorption tower with Ca(OH)2.

Here the air flow is introduced into the tower from below.

The solution flow absorb will go from top to bottom when the gas. When the absorption solution meets each other, the reaction process will be carried out to remove SO2 from the waste stream.

The upward flow of clean air is emitted into the environment meeting QCVN 19:2009/BTNMT.

The solution after the absorption process will be collected into the tank. sedimentation to remove the precipitate of CaSO3. The water will then be discharged into the receiving source.
